Sonography
“Clear Glimpses of New Beginnings with Pregnancy Sonography.”
An image can depict a thousand words, and it is the same with ultrasound imaging tests for pregnancies. Whether it is a regular check-up or monitoring of any condition, it is highly recommended to have Sonography or a digital picture of the baby. At Giggles, our expert team will not only perform detailed imaging tests but will schedule them and keep track of them for you, making you feel confident throughout the pregnancy journey.
What exactly is Sonography?
Sonography is a medical imaging technology that uses high-frequency sound waves to get real-time images of the internal organs & tissues of the body. It is sometimes referred to as ultrasound imaging or diagnostic medical Sonography. It is a painless, non-invasive method that aids in diagnosing and monitoring a variety of medical disorders by making it easier to see organs, tissues, and blood flow.
Various body organs, including the abdomen, pelvis, heart, blood arteries, muscles, tendons, and joints, are frequently examined with Sonography. Moreover, Sonography is often used to monitor foetal growth and determine the baby’s health during pregnancy.
Sonography is a real-time imaging technique that enables medical personnel to see the heart beating or blood flowing through channels. As it delivers clear images without the need for ionising radiation (as in X-ray), making it safe for use in various patient populations, including children and pregnant women, it is a highly important diagnostic tool in the healthcare industry.
Why do we need Sonography during pregnancy?
Sonography is extremely important, especially during pregnancy. The health and development of both the foetus & mother can be tracked with this safe and frequently used imaging technology. It is mainly used for:
- Verifying Pregnancy: In most cases, the initial step in verifying a pregnancy is Sonography. Even five to six weeks after the last menstrual cycle, it can identify the presence of a gestational sac. The gestational age and anticipated due date can both be ascertained with the aid of an early ultrasound.
- Foetal Development Tracking: Sonography enables medical professionals to monitor the foetus’s growth and development throughout pregnancy. It can evaluate the foetal heartbeat, count the number of foetuses (single or multiple), and evaluate the baby’s health.
- Screening for Anomalies: An anomaly scan, also known as a thorough ultrasound check, is carried out between Week-18 and Week-20 of pregnancy. The baby’s anatomy, including the brain, heart, spine, limbs, and internal organs, is evaluated in this comprehensive sonography scan. It aids in locating any structural flaws or birth problems.
- Determining the Location and Health of the Placenta: Sonography can reveal information regarding the position and health of the placenta. The diagnosed disorders may affect the planning of the birth and the health of the mother & foetus.
- Measuring & Monitoring Amniotic Fluid Levels: Sonography aids in determining and keeping track of the baby’s amniotic fluid levels. Amniotic fluid levels that are abnormally high or low could be a sign of trouble.
- Guidance for Interventions & Procedures: During pregnancy, Sonography is used to direct certain operations such as Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS) or Amniocentesis, which entail taking samples of foetal tissues or amniotic fluid for genetic analysis.
- Others: Sonography is used to evaluate factors such as foetal movement, breathing movements, and the measurement of blood flow in the placenta & umbilical cord in later stages of pregnancy to check the well-being of the foetus. These evaluations assist in making sure the infant is flourishing and that any concerns are handled appropriately.
What happens during Sonography?
The following are the usual steps involved in the Sonography/Ultrasound.
Preparation– To provide simple access to the abdomen, the mother could be requested to wear loose-fitting clothing. In some instances, a gown might be offered. The mother is positioned on her back on an examination table, exposing her abdomen. A gel-like material is applied to let sound waves travel through the skin more easily.
Transducer Placement- A portable instrument called a transducer is applied to the abdomen by the sonographer. The transducer sends high-frequency sound waves and picks up echoes that are reflected back from internal body structures.
Image Acquisition- The sonographer scans the abdomen with the transducer while taking pictures at various angles.
Foetal Measurements– The sonographer measures the foetus’s body along with some ratios. These measurements can assess the foetus’ gestational age in the early stages of pregnancy.
Assessment of the Foetal Anatomy- The sonographer thoroughly assesses the foetus’s anatomy, looking at its organs, limbs, brain, spine, heart, and other structures to ensure it is developing normally and spotting any potential anomalies.
Images & Recordings– During the examination, the sonographer may take still pictures and video clips. These recordings and photographs serve as a record for additional investigation and review.
Discussion & Interpretation– After the Sonography, a healthcare professional from our team at Giggles carefully reviews the images and findings. They explain the findings to the mother and discuss them by giving information about the baby’s development, health, and potential problems.
